The brief was to bring a dash of the Cote D’Azur to the Scottish Highlands. The space was a new extension to an eighteenth-century family house, complete with several bedrooms, a kitchen and a turret with a bell-tower. Maurizio’s first step was to lay matching floorboards in both the old and the new wings and create a colour scheme consisting of pastels, naturals, yellows and blues. Expensive finishes were rejected in favour of unfinished woods, antique leathers and robust textures. The client wanted a mix of old and new to create a lived-in feel. To this end, Maurizio Pellizzoni sourced many pieces from salvage and reclamation yards and included the client’s existing artworks and antiques.
"The house was renovated throughout and a new two-storey wing with a kitchen, extra bedrooms and living space was added. The bathrooms were given a facelift, too. And a bell tower was built to visually balance the extension and turret added by previous owners. The new wing feels as if it has always been there. ‘It works as an open space, yet is sympathetic to its original form."
"The house has a touch slightly masculine, due to the fact that most members of the extended family are male: we wanted a space for them where they would feel completely at ease. The style created by Maurizio Pellizzoni is absolutely magnificent, he managed to blend the atmosphere of New England to the French Vintage."
"The inspiration for this particular scheme was a cabin in the mountains, complete with lots of Americana. Elsewhere, rooms are more elegant and formal. I have taken care to avoid the tartan trap, possibly because I was born and brought up in the Highlands"
"We love the house now it’s finished and thoroughly enjoy the time we spend here. You could not possibly be anywhere but Scotland. Sometimes we do get all the seasons in one day, but when the sun shines it is the best place on earth."
